The Human Lawyer

Human Lawyer Podcast: Rick McDermott

December 10, 2019

If you have a product you created, manufactured, and are selling for money, it’s pretty easy to say, “That’s mine.” But what if someone wants to use your idea without paying, or copy your product without giving you credit… or paying? Your intellectual property IS as valuable to your business as any other part, and needs to be protected just as well. That’s where someone like Rick McDermott comes in.

Rick began McDermott IP Law after 24 years working for some of the region’s largest firms. But besides specializing your patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, and lawsuits defending your ideas as your own, Rick also volunteers a generous amount of time helping non-profits with their legal issues. We know Rick is a good human, even being named Charlotte Magazine’s Charlottean of the Year in 2014. That’s why we wanted him to be one of our first guests on The Human Lawyer Podcast — to ask him about the human he is, and what drives a tough legal mind to give away HIS intellectual property, FOR FREE, for good. Welcome Rick.

Amplifying human stories to explore how those stories inform people’s work as lawyers. Our mission: to expand the margin we have for other lawyers by focusing on that which makes us human to identify how the “human stuff” leads lawyers to a fulfilled career, whether in the law or something else.

the human lawyer is a 501(c)(3) north carolina non-profit corporation. it is not a law firm. it will never be a law firm. it does not offer legal services. it never will. the lawyers featured are completely independent and unaffiliated. they always will be. we focus exclusively on human storytelling through a variety of different mediums. if you are compelled to support: first, thank you; and second, all contributions are tax-deductible in furtherance of our charitable purpose.
