From the Colorado Rockies to 100 feet underwater, there really is no mountain high enough, and no valley low enough for Kate Kliebert. Nothing stops her. Her goal as a lawyer is to make sophisticated legal services available to small and medium-sized businesses. No doubt she is winning and will continue to win on that front. In the community, you’ll find her in a variety of places, most notably as the President of the Women’s Lawyers of Charlotte. She’s a generous giver of her time and a firm believer that lawyers are more than what they do in the courtroom or the boardroom. Here’s Kate’s story, in her words:
How’d You Get Here?
I grew up in a family of lawyers and for a long time thought I’d take a different path. But in college I worked at a law firm and realized practicing law might actually be something I’d enjoy. I took a year off after college to be sure and spent that time serving with Americorps in New Orleans. After law school, I practiced with a couple of big firms in Charlotte but always thought in the back of my mind that I’d like to have my own firm someday. I decided to take the plunge a little over a year ago and couldn’t be happier!
What Inspires You?
I love a good challenge and am fortunate enough to have a practice in data privacy, which evolves constantly and keeps me on my toes. There’s nothing better than helping clients solve problems that take them away from their business and prevent them from reaching their goals, especially when the problem is one they weren’t sure could be solved.
What Are You Passionate About?
SCUBA diving! I got certified about 6 years ago and have been hooked ever since. Under the ocean is one of the few places I can go these days to disconnect completely. Being 100 feet underwater really forces you to focus on what’s happening in the moment, reminds you to stay calm in tough situations, and has given me a new appreciation for how important and fragile the marine ecosystem is. Even after 6 years, I almost always see critters that I’ve never seen before. Plus, it’s a great excuse to travel to some places I never would’ve considered before! When you see me around town, ask me where I’ve been and what I’ve seen!
One Thing You Would Change About the Practice of Law . . .
The idea that being a lawyer defines someone’s value as a human being. I’ve known many lawyers who believe they can only be a successful attorney if they devote all their time and energy to their firm or to practicing law, at the expense of their personal interests. Unfortunately, the profession often reinforces this belief. We all need a break sometimes, a real break, and I truly believe that having interests outside of the law makes one a better and more well-rounded lawyer.
