The Human Lawyer Podcast: Theresa Viera

February 23, 2021

As an attorney, how do you manage when your greatest strength is your greatest challenge? Theresa Viera would know. Her work as a family law attorney is enhanced dramatically by her lived, life experiences—namely, her traumatic childhood experiences. That “baggage” as it can be called disparagingly is her currency. She invests that currency in her clients, helping them unpack the bag so the load is a little lighter.

Sometimes Theresa’s client work creates challenges for herself. Because what may be currency in one context is a heavy load in another. Her candor in that appraisal is empowering. As she would say, it has been a challenge to reframe her perception of right versus wrong; to handle conflict in a healthy manner; and to avoid people out or lashing out. Her introspection has led her to study emotional intelligence and personality types so she can equip herself with more sophisticated tools to handle life’s most sophisticated challenges, whether her client’s challenges or her challenges. Quite simply, Theresa has the same goal for her clients as she does for herself: to improve the situation.

So how is she going to channel her ongoing focus on improvement in 2021? Let’s hear it.
